I'm so old I Remember when:

It was - rolling it from hand to hand. Hmm, that may explain a lot.
Nah - The BEST part was popping it into a gazillion tiny little beads with one fingertip, then rolling it all back into one, quivering little mass ... all perfectly round. And yeah ... it does explain a lot for many of us!

EDIT - to fix an Edit! :he

IDK if anyone remembers this, but when I was little you could go to a gas station, (the one with the Pegasus on it) and they would give out little plastic toy animals.

I remember the shoe store would give little boys a toy and little girls a ring or a bracelet

And a real toy would be in the Cracker Jack box

Kinda.
Liquid elemental mercury that we played with as kids is not readily absorbed through the skin, so playing with the mercury in broken thermometers really isn't such a hazard.
Mercury is certainly not great if ingested but it takes quite high levels of exposure to be worrying, though mercury vapor is not something I would want to be around. I think I still have a tooth filling or maybe two that are old enough that they are mercury based.
I remember playing with mercury, rolling it around in my hand, squishing it, rolling it back into a ball, playing with it, watching it get smaller and smaller ... until it just ... disappeared. Yup. Absorbed into the skin. And I will say yeah, probably explains a lot.
