Now tights might be a little different, thicker.
These were stockings, very sheer. (But if your not familiar with stockings that may be a circular description.)
In the 40's silk and nylon used for stockings became very rare because the material was used for parachutes.
Also (im told) the stockings back then had a seam sewn up the back. If you couldn't get stockings sometimes you could draw a line up the back of your calf.
