I'm so old I Remember when:

Well,
It was a dark and rainy night (really was), I was laying in bed watching TV. Web TV was sitting on top the TV and the TV was in one of those 90s era entertainment centers. Window behind my head, TV against wall opposite of window. There was a good bit of lightening and thunder. Lights were off all if a sudden there was a very bright flash and the loudest boom I ever heard, felt it too. The web TV fell in Front of the TV hanging by the cords and smoking. Lost 3 tvs and the web TV. Scared the daylights out of me. I guess it didn't actually but I swear it's like the lightning came into the window! Man, it was so loud and bright. The flash was blinding
Oh wow. Good thing you weren't holding anything connected to the mains socket.

Always use a power surge protector, or, even better, a uninterruptible power supply.

No.

(I have a power strip connected to the wall socket. From there, I have my laptop, and a couple Macs running off of the power strip, along with a extension cord running across the floow to my amplifier, speakers, TV, and device that plays back the music, along with powering my computer-repair workstation setup. On the opposite side of the power stip connected to the wall, I have yet another one connected to the wall, with my main PC, monitor, and device charging station hooked up, along with a extension cord running up the wall and straight to my networking setup, which has a network switch, a computer, a monitor, and a DVR for security cameras. Phew. What a mess.)
