I'm so old I Remember when:

This is not it at all. There are barely any newspapers for kids to deliver anymore. Nobody reads the newspaper anymore and many of them went belly up. Or they have everything online, where people read it for free. People won't pay for something if they can get it for free and I don't blame them
It started happening way before the newspapers went online. 25+ years ago the manager where I worked took up a newspaper route. And he was far from the only adult doing this.

And you do have to pay a subscription for online newspapers after the first x free articles. At least here.

There are some people who have found ways around that.

i remember when pages were paper and i got paper cuts . i guess paper cuts are a thing of the past
Not for me... :fl
I think it's more a sign of the times. Kids don't have the work ethic needed to get up at ridiculous o'clock or to go out after school and lose precious time from gaming or social media
My mom used to get up at four in the morning in second grade to deliver papers, in the seventies. At that age I was sleeping in until nine am .
That was the thing then, riding bicycles, hang out with friends and work on the bikes.
I remember this back when I was young (it seems ages ago!). The kids in the neighborhood would all ride around on their bikes until dark. Sometimes we'd join them. I knew nearly everyone in the subdivision...and no one was ever on their phone.
I have wonder about that... is it not safe anymore for kids to walk around the neighbourhood by themselves?
I did at ten years old, and with my little sister. There were two sheriff's deputies and a fireman who lived in the neighborhood, which helped a lot. But I also remember going for a walk in the back woods (there were walking trails and a lake) and a man tried to...I don't know but my mom hustled us out of there and we never went down there again.

It is not safe now for kids to hang out like it used to.
Those carefree days.

I think it's more a sign of the times. Kids don't have the work ethic needed to get up at ridiculous o'clock or to go out after school and lose precious time from gaming or social media, plus adults with cars have taken over the routes and can do much more territory than a single kid with a bike or on foot. Plus, parents don't want their kids out on their own doing this and don't want to or can't accompany them either.

:rant
I don't know. Would you want your 10 to 13-yo running around the neighborhood at 4:30 in the morning delivering papers nowadays? By themselves? I wouldn't. I don't fault the kids for being lazy, I fault what society has become. It's not safe now. And most parents work, who wants to get up at 4 am to help their kid with a paper route when they have to be at work at 8 a.m.

Remember the phone used to be the landline, the one and only phone in the house. There is another extension in another room and my brother used to pick it up listen to my conversation with my friend. Gee I used to get so upset with him.
We still have a landline. I use it to call my friend since it's better than the family cell phone.
