When I was in middle school, the high school orchestra performed Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. For those unaware, the score calls for a climactic volley of cannon fire.

To create the cannon effect in a high school performance hall, one of the percussionists stepped slightly off stage and shot blanks from a shotgun into a metal trashcan. This was at a large public high school in southern California. Imagine that happening today.

It worked brilliantly, btw. The sound was awesome.

I'm so old I remember Coast to Coast AM.

I loved it when he did Ghost to Ghost AM on Halloween and the whole show was scary stories.

Art Bell was one of the best interviewers ever. Made for great radio.
