In the end didn’t we all just end up sliding on our butts……..or, whatever body part hit first. We just used inner tubes. Except when we were really little, Mom had a picture of me and my twin in a turkey roaster.

In the summer we laid down big opened cardboard boxes on grass covered slopes and slid down those. In the end didn’t we all just end up sliding on our butts……..or, whatever body part hit first.
They're all plastic.Me, too! Are they still made of metal or some kind of tough plastic now? The metal ones got pretty banged up over time. They were also very cold to sit on!

We used kitchen trays. Thinking about it they may have been roasting pans from the old stove. We just used inner tubes. Except when we were really little, Mom had a picture of me and my twin in a turkey roaster.
Still have mine! It gets waxed (runners, too) every winter. We don't get snow very often, but when we do ... I'm READY!Who remembers sailing down a snowy hill on one of these?View attachment 4022356
Saucers are fun for spins & such, but their BEST use is for packing down the run so the real sleds can get some SERIOUS speed!I had a sled like that, but it usually just sank into the snow. I was happy when they came out with saucer sleds!
... and DANG, we had fun!Remove the risk, remove the thrill. Our generation had great childhoods because we weren't risk adverse.
I had a Super Carpet, I think they were called. Might have been Crazy Carpet. Basically a sheet of plastic. The speed I would get from that thing!!!Me, too! Okay, am I the only one that thinks that the widow was probably a mass murderer that offed her husbands for the insurance money? I mean, she was widowed SEVEN TIMES!!!And every one was an 'Enery!
A toboggan was my vehicle of choice. Get some siblings and cousins on that sucker and you could really pick up speed flying down the hill dodging berry bushes and rocks hidden under the snow, ducking under the barbed wire fence in the upper cow pasture, across the frozen pond, down the drive, past the barn and the house, across the road, and through the apple trees to come to a rest just before the creek that ran next to the railroad tracks. Good times.I had a sled like that, but it usually just sank into the snow. I was happy when they came out with saucer sleds.
