I'm so old I Remember when:

We didn’t have a school cafeteria. Only drinks and soup from a machine. We had to bring our own lunchbox with sandwiches and fruit. 🥪
We didn’t have a cafeteria as they are understood today where there is some choice and the kids line up.
We had to sit at tables and a big dish of something was plonked on the table.
The rule was you had to at least try the food provided.
Some things were quite good but much of it was horrible!
There is a peculiarly British (I think it is actually Scottish) dish called Kedgeree. When I look at a recipe for it today I feel like it is something I would like. But my childhood memories of it are so awful that I can’t even think of trying.
It took me decades to realize I like cauliflower because the smell of it seemed to dominate the entire school.

Family style school lunches? Never heard of such a thing. Bet that made for some interesting interactions.
