I noticed my chicken’s crop hadn’t cleared 48 hours ago. She is a 6mo old buff. Since then, I have been massaging it frequently with coconut and olive oil, I tube fed 15ml water twice, I gave 200ml docusate sodium, I’ve tried everything I’ve seen that could be a solution. I thought it could be getting better last night because she started pooping (she only pooped once the first 24 hours) and her crop felt smaller and softer but this morning her crop is hard still. She hasn’t eaten since this all started. Please help me I don’t want to lose her @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock @azygous

As your careful treatment of the massage seems to be improving things I would carry on.
Do you know if she has had any grit ? If she has then this will help her.
In a nutshell I would keep up the massaging.
🤞

I’m continuing to! Just getting a bit discouraged and more worried by the hour. I have grit for her but she won’t eat it.

As you massage, do you feel anything of substance in the crop such as grass or even something that shouldn't belong in a crop? Sometimes impaction occurs due to the chicken swallowing indigestible material. If this is the case, crop surgery may be necessary at some point.

Keep offering the grit. Chickens will consume it as they feel the need. You might give a probiotic to introduce digestive enzymes. But do continue the coconut oil and massage. Most people skimp on the oil. I use a full teaspoon of coconut oil every hour or so with massage until the mass breaks up. If the impaction has gone on too long, treating a yeast infection may need to be a follow-up treatment.

I feel some stuff in there, but nothing that feels alarming. I will keep trying! Any cues I should look for that she’s getting worse and I have to take extreme action? I tried an epsom salt flush this morning. After an hour or two, she pooped twice, but very runny and little substance to it. Her crop is still at least partially full. I’ll try more coconut oil for our next massage.

How long is too long ?

After several days of crop stasis (contents not moving), yeast naturally starts to colonize. There may start to be a smell to the chicken's head, a sour, vomit smell. But you will verify a yeast infection by finding the crop full of sour liquid in the morning before food and water is consumed.
