My 5 week old chicks were attacked by a raccoon. He killed 2 and wounded one severely, taking all her chest skin and feathers off along with making a small wound in her gullet. I immediately sprayed her with blue coat and brought her in the house expecting her to be dead the next morning. Instead she was eating and drinking with small amounts of food and water escaping through the gullet. I carefully added two stitches to close the hole and kept spraying her with an antimicrobial and blue coat. After 4 days I removed the stitches. She continued to improve and now, 12 weeks later she has acclimated to life in the coop and is just one of the girls. Seems hens have an amazing ability to heal if given the chance! She is beautiful and happy! Thank you BYC for having posted advice to help with these horrible injuries. She is here today because of you!
