My grandma recently gave me two poultry books. One is “Starting Right With Poultry.” It’s by G. T. Klein. The book is from the 1970s. Anyways, one thing that I found interesting is that this book recommended that (back then,) you feed chick scratch for the chick’s first three days and then you move onto mash. It said that it was to not disturb the chick’s digestive system. Chick scratch is regular, basic scratch made from corn, wheat and oats, just grounded very fine. I think that this is quite interesting. I am wondering if it is still true and we just feed mash from the start anyways because we are led to believe this is right. But the book is older so not everything is accurate. :)

That is funny and great to see someone talking to the older generations :celebrate as my Grandfather showed me how to hatch chicken eggs and take care of the chicks and back in the 1960's that is all we had was out in the country was corn or scratch to give to the chicks and mo'ma with her chicks out in the yard teaches her baby's to eat what she eats so in reality the book is correct and books written in the 1800's are still worth reading they all have good information ...

I find it interesting that it says that the grains give the chick "less digestive disturbances." Their system is not used to any solid food, so I would think any appropriate feed would be about the same in that regard. It is interesting, but I think I will go with the advances in nutritional science and use complete and balanced feeds. Might a well give them every advantage I can. I'm sure I'll find my own ways to screw up lol. Cool old book, thanks for sharing!
