International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@wrathsfarm question for you ,if you don't mind. The gray colored chicks are they considered "blues" ?

Yes, you have blues and blacks there. If there’s any which are light grey which you can’t distinguish from the front bib, it’s a splash but I can’t see any of them. The blue will replaced any black expected on a black copper.
I have a hard time distinguishing between Blues and Splash in hatch down. Is there a tell?
Or are they just a lighter grey which would still seem like a guess to me.

Yes i have 4 black marans hens
Yes you wil have blue and black coppers then. My concern is that the introduction of red tailed black genes will result in laced or over coloured breasts, which will need breeding back out for SOP BCMs.

Or you can breed them to get black tailed reds back out and maybe improve this line with BCM genes.

Much lighter. Splashes don’t really have the distinct penguin bibs, it all kind of blends together. Very pale, almost like lavenders at hatch.

At least most of the time, some darker splashes can be more easily confused. Blue (my Brahma) for example seemed blue until he was six weeks. I didn’t see him as a chick though, only after he got true feathers.

I need is more explanation? As this is learning tool for me. Also, the importance of breeding back to the BCM.

The birchen pattern on which BCMs are based naturally codes for laced copper on the breast, but the BCM SOP calls for a solid black breast in hens. Therefore work is done in BCM lines to correct this that isn’t necessary in other patterns.

As a result, the F1s might have copper in their breast that shouldn’t be there.

I hope that makes sense. I can grab photos if it will help.
