International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

The birchen pattern on which BCMs are based naturally codes for laced copper on the breast, but the BCM SOP calls for a solid black breast in hens. Therefore work is done in BCM lines to correct this that isn’t necessary in other patterns.

As a result, the F1s might have copper in their breast that shouldn’t be there.

I hope that makes sense. I can grab photos if it will help.
Yes, that's alot clearer. What is F1
Yes pictures would be great

This is what the front of a BCM hen should be.

this is an impure for BCM, see how that copper is more yellow and laces the black breast feathers. That’s the difference that might pop up when crossing the two varieties, though of course you can fix this down the line.

It’s a matter of selecting the best offspring and breeding them back to their mothers (if you want to breeds BCMs for show). I’d say we see how they look when they’re older and decide the right direction, because you may be lucky.

Oh no how sad 😢. I hate it when that happens. I lost 4 in the last 6 months.
I’ve lost a dozen or so in that time. Had a strange night where 9 died. No marks (though I didn’t get to see the bodies) and all one pen. All my Polish Batam hens died that night so I’m left with only Slash, the cock, who somehow bullies 8 lbs cocks in the layers pen.

NO i don't think so about doing shows. But, you have been very informative and I appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me.
