Hi everyone!

My name is Danielle and I am a Silkie Breeder and I own The Silkie Lab.

I'm in Michigan, and I created my own little business for DNA Testing Chickens, Geese, etc. I am only a few years into breeding silkies, so I wouldn't consider myself a full-blown breeder yet, but I'm working on Lavender, Lavender Laced, and Porcelain (Mille x Lavender).

I wanted to join here to not only discuss chickens and breeding, but also, my business. At The Silkie Lab, I do DNA Sex Testing on many species, along with Antigen testing for Mareks and ALV, and I test for the Lavender Gene. Within a month or so, I will also be releasing testing for the Blue Egg Gene, and the Recessive White Gene. I really enjoy studying genetics, and working in my lab, and looking out the window and seeing my Silkies :).

Hiya, Danielle, and welcome to BYC! :frow

I raise and breed only silkies. I just sell them as chicks or grow them out to around 3-4 months to see what they are, then keep or peddle, so never really needed DNA for any.

We have cuckoo, buff, paint, chocolate, splashes, etc. I'd love to try lavender but read those take more complex breeding to keep colors true. It's cool that you are doing those. :love

Love it!! Same with me when it comes to breeding :) Some colors are much harder to tell and take a lot longer to develop, like Lavenders for example. And those ones aren't necessarily harder, but because of their genetics, they develop slower, are more prone to health problems, and you need to breed black in every few generations to keep the color nice and the health good :)
