Is Brewer Yeast necessary? From grocery store? Yogurt?

If you can't find the brewers yeast, they actually make niacin tablets. If you mix 200mg of crushed niacin into one gallon of water and use that as their drinking water, it serves the same purpose.

I don't have the packets anymore, but I am sure that they did because that was the ingredient I was told to look for. They had a box of regular yeast, and they had packets of brewers yeast too. The packets were white with red lettering.

I did google it, because it has me aggravated. I know I have never seen brewers yeast in packet form here. It is used to make beer, so that's probably why. I live in a dry county that is surrounded completely by dry counties, so anything that would be used to make 'brew' would definitely not be here!

So anyway, just make sure that the yeast you get says brewer's yeast, and that it contains niacin, or just find some waterfowl starter and don't worry about it.

Check with your feed store, they may be able to order it.

You know, that may be it. I mean, i've never looked in other stores here for it, but this is a wet county. A VERY wet county! And the important thing IS the niacin, so look for that and you're all good. I went back to the group and you can buy it in feeds store and health food store too if you want to go for the brewers yeast.

In addition to being used for beer, deactivated brewer's yeast is also used as a nutritional and flavor supplement, and is often found labeled as “nutritional yeast” in grocery stores. It is important to make sure that you purchase an inactive form of yeast for a nutritional supplement, because active yeast will flourish in your intestines, potentially causing health problems.

That is taken from bsaffels' link, so if you can't find it anywhere check out the grocery store too just in case.

About the yogurt, the only thing I know of it being given for is to help the good bacteria in the ducks intestines grow after they have been on antibiotics. If yours weren't I don't know of any other benefit, but it won't do any harm. If there is another benefit maybe someone else can chime in.

If you do need to give them yogurt, it has to be plain yougurt. Not anything like yoplait or a flavored yougurt, the real deal.

That's helpful - I think I saw that (nutritional yeast) at walmart.

thanks -

That's where I got mine, but everyone might not find it with the other yeast. My Walmart is organized so randomly, when I go in Walmarts in other towns I can never find anything!
