I have a 10-11 week old cockerel who seems a little off
He is going through his juvenile molt I believe, does it cause them stress?
His feathers are very ruffled, he’s acting a bit lethargic, and his comb is a little droopy
I also noticed some poop stuck to his butt feathers, it looks runny and greenish in colour
He’s still eating and drinking ok
It has been very hot recently as well
Any idea what’s going on out what I should do if anything?
None of my other birds are ill

I’m beginning to suspect worms, green runny poop with a few red spots

  • Did you inspect him carefully for poultry mites yet?
  • When was the last time you dewormed?
  • What exactly are you feeding?
  • How many birds do you have in total ( any adults who might keep him from the feeder?) and how big are your coop and run?
  • Did you bring in new birds into your flock lately, or have you visited a poultry show or poultry market?

I think he may have poultry mites as he has flaky skin and dark spots on his feathers, and small spots of blood on his face
As he is only 10 weeks he hasn’t been dewormed, but I was planning to do my flock soon
Pullet grower with low dose preventative coccidodisis medication
12, his crop is full and no one is keeping him from food, they are all the same age
I did bring in new birds but I quarantined them, they did have lice (not mites) and coccidiosis which have been treated

Oh my coop and run aren’t big enough and I’m moving them to a bigger pen in the next few days

Treat him and the coop for mites as they will suck the life out of your birds leaving them anaemic and listless just like your cockerel.
Do you have somewhere safe you can move him with a friend so he will get some rest to recover? Feed him some scrambled eggs and chopped raw beef liver to restore red blood cells.

I plan to do a thorough clean and treat of all my birds, I have four older hens in a different pen who I’ll treat too
No I don’t unfortunately but I do have a separate pen I can put him in while he recovers, this pen doesn’t have mites in it
I don’t have access to raw beef liver but eggs I can do
Will any other kind of meat do?

Oh I doused the cockrel in the treatment, which is powder based and he already seemed to perk up a little, walking around, when earlier he was just sitting slumped and didn’t react to being looked at all over
