Is this Silkie a Rooster or Hen ?

I unfortunately have three silkie roosters, they are crowing right now to tell us to "wake up". That photo needs some clarity but if they have the mulberry "peanut" over the beak then it's a male. It looks like it could be a rooster to me, but again I can't really tell from that one photo. Post a few more pictures if you could.

My money would be on roo still, I believe I see the comb and neck feathers of a male. Females tend to have a bushier head and what I call a more uniform feathering on the neck into the body. My roosters always "dance" at me so if he has exhibited that sort of behavior if you lower your hand to him then that's a giveaway as well. I'm no expert but I would assume if you can't tell for sure this week your right around the corner for knowing for sure. We will see what others have to say!

Hi.

Looks like he's trying to grow a comb to me.

I have 3 that are a little over 4 months old and 1 is starting to get a hint of something. Plus he is heavier than the others.

And one of the other ones has started walking around doing what I call hen squawking. But time will tell, because in my other breeds even the cockerels do the egg song sometimes.

Generally a good time to try and sex them is 4-5 mos. of age, so they are almost there. Silkies can be extremely difficult to sex, sometimes you don't know till the lay or crow.

Standing profile photos are good if they are clear (not blurry) but, I prefer a head on shot, with crest held back to fully expose the comb.

I used to think "you don't know till the lay or crow....."

Bur having seen so many cockerels do the egg song and knowing hens can certainly crow, I wanna see those eggs!
