In need of advice. Pls no rude comments.
For three nights I’ve had something come into my yard trying to kill my animals. specifically chickens but i have goats including small babies also. I set up a camera and left the camera up on my phone and happened to wake up tonight to see a German shepherd in my yard. Went outside and it was actually three that I’ve seen roam my area before. Thankfully I keep my animals locked away at night except for one chicken that got out and they killed it. Anyway, when I went out there intending on scaring off or even dispatching, I couldn’t do it. I scared them off but I lost my nerve in actually dispatching them. If it were a wild animal like a raccoon like I initially thought that’s one thing but knowing it’s one of my neighbors pets is completely different for me. Obviously I won’t let them kill my animals tho so I’m just wondering if anyone on here has had to handle a situation like this? I shot at one that got a little too close to me but I missed and it ran off. I just know im gonna feel so guilty. I figured I’d call animal control but there doesn’t seem to be any in my area. My next line of action now is contacting the people who own these dogs. Thing is they don’t care what happens to them and have advised us in the past to shoot their dogs if they come in my yard. I’m in northeast Texas, jefferson area if anyone knows of any resources that’d be great. I have a LGD in training but it’s young and not in the same part of my yard where my chickens are.

Will law enforcement do anything to help you? I'd have to call the sheriff's department here in rural Iowa. But, they might just tell you to shoot the dogs. Which is a shame. People who don't care about their own animals' well being shouldn't be allowed to have them.

Is there a shelter or rescue group that might be able to persuade the worthless owners to surrender these dogs? If they've already consented to having them shot, maybe they would be open to HUMANELY getting rid of them.

No matter how good your young LGD becomes, it likely won't be a match for three big dogs running with a pack mentality.

Please provide updates, and I'm sorry one of your chickens was killed.

I’m gonna call law enforcement in the morning and see what they can do. I also plan to go to these neighbors and see what happens. I’ve contacted the local shelter also making them aware of these dogs that have basically been abandoned. I’ll update when I get an answer! Thank you

I'd feel less bad about killing a dog than killing a possum

The possum is a natural, innocent creature that lived harmlessly in the forest until humans bulldozed the forest down and stole its home

That dog on the other hand is foreign to the region, has a home, has someone who feeds it, and its owner also doesn't care if their dog roams around killing random innocent creatures

Random predators are innocent beings trying to eat because they're hungry. Roaming dogs are the pets of trashy people that just kill for fun

Here is your answer. Unless they are going to contain their animals, which they will not, this is the end result.
Seems they are now a Pack and I would not want to be near them.
it's very sad all around but sometimes you need to just shut off that side of your thinking, shoot them and drag them to the owners house and leave them. Or at least one, they MAY keep the others contained.

This.
Just shoot the dogs. They don't belong in your property, and they don't belong in the wild. You shouldn't feel guilty at all.
I have no problem dispatching dogs. I feel a lot worse if I had to dispatch a wild creature.
Just think at how much wildlife these dogs might kill. They do damage.
If their owner don't care, then I would care even less.

Talking to the owners.... this is a lot like politics. When you ask a politician privately why they don't clean up the waste and fraud, you get told someone paid dearly to create that waste and fraud. They know better than to allow large dogs to roam free.

If you go talk to them, the second the dogs go missing you will be blamed. In a rural setting with room to shoot safely, practice the 3S method.

Shoot

Shovel

Shut up

I like cats, but since my old dog died of old age a horde of cats have taken up residence in my back yard and porch. Fleas....fricking fleas....

I'm sorry you are put in this position. I too would have a hard time shooting a dog. It's not the dog's fault that the owners are idiots. I would be inclined to try a humane trap, and drop the dog at the animal shelter as a stray. Please be careful with your pup, he would, even as an adult, be at grave risk against three large dogs. Good luck, whatever you end up doing.
