I didn't read into the toxicity claims, just wanted to point it out. But, your info makes sense. I use a different heartworm chewable med from the vet as well. My dogs don't do well with topicals. Not sure why? Maybe the poodle in them, because that is the only similarity they have.Ivermectin is widely used as a heartworm preventative for dogs and cats. It's given at a very low dose (micrograms per kg) and is very safe and effective. But it will only prevent heartworm (and no other parasites) at the doses indicated. Any drug in that class, if overdosed, can be toxic and is absorbed into the fat, so it sticks around for a while and has no reversal agent, and if you use the cattle or horse formulation for dogs, it's super easy to overdose.
There are lots of safe and effective (and cost-effective!) treatments for fleas, so there is no reason to try ivermectin for fleas.
What happens when you apply topicals to them? What brands are you applying?I didn't read into the toxicity claims, just wanted to point it out. But, your info makes sense.
