Kombucha scoby for the girls?

I used to cut the kombucha SCOBY up before feeding it to the chickens and ducks, but the chickens can actually rip the pellicles apart very well with their beaks. The ducks (Muscovy) also have a good technique for removing smaller pieces - they grab an edge and whip it around until some tears off. They also like to try "soaking" it in the pools (that doesn't work so well, lol).

In addition to feeding the surplus scobies to the flock, I make kombucha tea vinegar and put a little in their drinking water daily so they get a steady supply of probiotics (in addition to those in their fermented feed). They also get the fruit strained out from water kefir 2nd ferment, and they love it.

That is a HUGE SCOBY! I love how many years this conversation has lasted over!! I have a separate jar for my SCOBY's, called a SCOBY hotel. I am keeping my Mother in mycontinuous brew and then I peel layers off of her and put them in my SCOBY hotel. There, they can continue to grow if I add a little bit of sweetened tea. Then, I can cycle using my Mother and using SCOBY in the hotel and all of the extra layers go to the chicken. I would recommend doing something like that and peeling apart that giant SCOBY if you can. It looks pretty solid, but I can see layers at the bottom.

Wow! This is one of those great old threads that just keeps on giving. I checked here to see if I to could feed my SCOBY to my girls. And obviously I can and will. One observation though, a few frames back was a picture of that glorious huge Scoby in that 2 1/2 gallon fermenter. I batch ferment as well, and one word of caution, your Scoby should never get that big. I peel mine back to about an inch thick. If it gets that large it is not allowing oxygen to get down through into the fermented product. It will not make good Kambucha if it cannot get oxygen. My two cents your mileage may vary.

Yay for a great use for scobys! Cutting them up is tough, so into for food processor we go, and mix into some mash, or just plain. With all the scobys I have saved up, I could probably treat my flock for a good month. Also read on Murano chicken farm page that they are 18% protein, and 12 % fiber, along with all the great probiotics.
