Does anybody know what this is? I noticed one morning that my chicken was using her wing to move around. I picked her up and saw her leg was completely limp. She uses the joint to move around. I separated her and once I examined her I found this. They have been closed up in the coop for 2 days because of a severe wind storm so I only noticed after.
I gave her an epsom salt bath and tried to clean it. Her bum was also very dirty from poop. I also got rid of some feathers around the lump to keep it clean. I’ve been putting antibiotic ointment on it periodically. She is eating and drinking like usual. Also she is around 2 years old.

Is this a feather cyst or a tumor or something else? Should i attempt to cut into it?

Hmm I’m unsure since I don’t have much experience with this type of thing, but I’ll ask some questions to get some more info and then hopefully more experienced people can see this and help you more than I can. First things first, how old is this bird? Is the lump hot? Is it squishy and pliable or is it hard/ solid? How is this chicken eating? Is she still drinking and staying hydrated? Hoping for the best with your hen. 🙏

It could be a squamous cell cancer, which is a common tumor in chickens, but only a vet taking a biopsy, looking at the tissue under a microscope, could diagnose something like that. An ingrown feather cyst is also common, but usually not so large. Those may be filled with solid pus. I would clean it and watch it, to see if it grows or changes. You could see a vet or start some antibiotics to see if anything changes. Was there a dark scab on top of it before you soaked her?

Yes there was, it came off after the soak

She’s about 2 years old. The lump is warm and hard/solid. She’s eating and drinking as much as usual but sleeping when she’s not.

Did you ever figure out what this was? I am finding these kinds of masses aren't as common as other things so it's hard to find any information. My 6 month old hen has one in the exact same place, and she is not using the leg on that side. She stands and hops on her good leg. It's warm and solid, not squishy.
