Lime powder used in coop

I just read an blog post on a private site and the person has been using powdered lime under straw for bug control and odor control. Anyone else doing this or read anything? Brand is First Saturday Lime she uses. Thanks

I use a little garden lime underneath the bedding -- just a dusting. But it's mainly for the benefit of my future compost rather than for the chickens. Ground rock isn't going to do anything about bugs and the pH balancing effect is irrelevant when the bedding is kept perfectly dry.

The lime used in whitewash, which does have a protective effect against insects, is a different kind of lime. I do not know if it's safe and/or effective when just sprinkled instead of used as whitewash.

I use First Saturday Lime in the coop and nesting boxes and also in their dirt baths. It controls all kinds of things and is very safe. Once there were some ants making a path up to the coop,and I sprayed some on them and they were gone in 5 minutes. Also good to use in their water containers and bird baths outside.

I was told by a lady who works at our local TSC that also raises chickens also that she uses Barn Lime under her wood shavings in her coop and run to prevent mites here in Mississippi. She will also use DE on top of that if needed for areas with ants causing problems in the run because we have such problems with fire ants here. Right now especially with all the heat. She told me doing that regimen she never has a mite problem.

Sure! I hope it works and believe it will. She seemed very knowledgeable and experienced and also she had nothing to gain by helping me out so well that day with all the amounts of info she shared with me. She wasn’t going to gain any commission from any items I bought that day or from a $3 bag of 50lbs of barn lime. I already had the litter. Good luck. I have not had good enough weather to spread ours yet. It had been either flooding or 90% humidity and heat indices around 105 here before during, and after Laura still. Rain and heat the same pattern again today so far. The chickens are suffering and so am I.

I bet you are suffering! Same as well here too. I live in Sacramento CA where the weather this month has been horrifically hot. Like record temps.....110 one day.(altho we don't have the humidity you have) Now we have hot weather (not as hot) and there are fires all over CA and we have very unhealthy index of smoke, so, in addition to the pandemic, we have to stay inside because of the smoke outside. It feels like a plague of Old Testament times! Hummmm, maybe it is. I am not sure why you can't sprinkle the lime around anyway, like in their bedding or nesting areas......may cooler weather come to you all soon!

I look at y’all situation to be much more dire than ours. We can breathe at least. Fresh air everyday. It might be like drinking in hot bath water when we do but it is clean and free if pollutants. - as long as you don’t count the mosquitoes and June bugs or locusts at night. They are pretty bad right now but I will take them anyway and not complain and feel very blessed to be here. I would not want to be dealing with what you guys are dealing with one bit. I will keep my heat rash, chigger and mosquitos bites on the kids- for some reason I think it’s the meds I take or my medical conditions themselves but they don’t bite me or I don’t have a histamine response to them only at least. -, and and the occasional poison ivy, and the garden worms the heat brings on, and the blasted fire ants. Gosh those things are everywhere. They are terrorizing my chickens but it is much better since we went around the whole perimeter of the yard and run. The chickens were literarily stomping in their tracks at times while they were eating. Hated it for them. You guys take it easy and be safe I hope. Come in Fall! Hurry! Hurry!
