Someone explain mafia wars to me. I joined but haven't been able to figure out how to play. LOL Anyone have the extremely simplified version?

I used to be a Mafia Wars addict. My husband had to do an intervention. I went to go pick my son up from school and he screamed across the parking lot to me "Hey Mom, did you whack any thugs or rob an electronics store while I was gone?" Needless to say they didn't invite me to join the PTA....
