MJ's little flock

The Vulture has started trying to crow. It seems young to me. Is it young? I was hoping to have him around for a couple more months.
I don’t remember how long we had Bela and G-man before they started crowing, and I wasn’t exactly sure of their ages either. Bela was getting a long tail but G-man crowed first.

I'm trying to come up with a reasonable plan for all the vet care needed for the flock.

The Vulture
Mary's suprelorin
Edie's surgery and further tests

It's adding up to rather a large sum that I can't afford at this time of year.

I was spoiled with Dr Mark. Remember when he had Mary in his hospital for a week and charged $800? For Edie the quote is $3000. I'm considering euthanasia for her, which makes a waste of all the medicating we've done so far.

I love these new vets, they're outstanding. But the prices are outstanding too.

No, that is Tassels who molted after her last bout of broodiness and is looking very smug and snug in her glorious fluff.
Everyone else except Calypso is still molting but have been at it for a while so have many feathers back. Piglet looks almost back to normal.
Calypso however kept laying eggs until almost Christmas Day and then suddenly in the last few days has dropped all her feathers. It is a worry as we have a nasty cold spell heading our way next week.
The cold spell has moderate somewhat. Some good news.

It seems a terrible thing when vet care becomes unaffordable. It's absolutely criminal when poor vet care is the same price as is the case where I am.

Is there no chance at all she might get through without a week in hospital ?
I suppose I would give painkillers if she suffers and just wait and see if she pulls through. Au$3000 /€ 1800 is an awful lot of money. 😢

That's shocking.

At least I'm paying high prices for high care standards.

I'm going to look into pet insurance for chickens. It may turn out to be more manageable.

I doubt it.

Without the surgical clean out of egg matter from her abdomen she'll get increasingly sick and die.

I've also been considering painkillers for her.

Well, The Vulture is booked in for his first and last vet appointment on Friday morning. I booked him with the local vets because it'll be a far shorter ride in the car for him. He'll be humanely put to sleep then cremated, with his ashes returned to me later.

:( poor little guy

At least he's had a good childhood.

Really hoping Tomboy Australorp is a pullet.

If ever there's a need to purchase chicks again, I'll go with a sex-linked breed for my own sake.
