MJ's little flock

I think I just googled it and whatever came up, I then went looking for reviews, which didn't seem favourable. This was a while ago so I can't remember who it was, and they may no longer exist anyway. Pet insurance is mostly for cats and dogs, but it would be nice for 'exotics' as well.
My brother in law has parrot health insurance. I don't know what it cost.

Following from my previous post, Edie has an appointment with a new vet, Dr Christo, today in a few hours. I've sent through her clinical history. Hopefully he will take her case and be a little more affordable. Dr Christo's clinic is a 35 minute drive away, so that's not too bad.
It's great that you have choices.

I'm very impressed with Dr Christo. He and his student reviewed her clinical history and gave her a very careful and detailed examination. His student even found a parasite on her and caught it with sticky tape! They're looking at it under the microscope as I type this.

It was a louse. So tomorrow I'll be deep cleaning her coop and everything in it, and putting pestene on her.

Dr Christo is reluctant to attempt surgery with Edie's anaemia worsening, but if she has a louse, maybe she has mites too, and they would be a contributing factor to her anaemia. So she's going to have a big clean up, more antibiotics, more vitamin K, more anti-inflammatories, and a re-check next Friday.

His internal examination revealed two lumps that you wouldn't find in a healthy hen. One quite hard to the left of the vent and a squishy patch further in and down on the right. There could be more lumps beyond his reach. I was impressed with his skills, she barely noticed the examination.

I'm glad you were able to get another vet's opinion, and that he seems to be competent. You certainly are doing all that's possible for Edie.

I hope the pestene helps her, and that she can get over her anemia. It will at least certainly make her more comfortable.
I spent months fighting lice on my chickens. While the healthy ones seemed to manage to maintain a relatively low number of them, with my two ex-batt's who were very unwell, the lice took over and it was quite an infestation.
(You might want to look if you see some of the other hens preening excessively, or check them if possible.)
The lice on my chickens were so small it often took me several minutes to spot just one, on the hens that didn't have many. I would simply never have seen them if I hadn't known for sure one of the chicken was infested.
It's quite a week for you with important decisions to make for the chickens :hugs
