MJ's little flock

Today is going to be rather hot, so the hens are out of the run, making use of the deep shade. I thought perhaps they'd enjoy some chilled grapes for a morning snack, so I cut up a few handfuls to scatter.

Melissa is not yet a member of the flock, and as I went outside with the grapes, I saw she was on her own under the jacaranda, so I threw a generous handful to the older ladies, then a handful to Melissa, then another handful to the older hens. That way Melissa would have time to eat a few grape pieces before her stash could be raided by the other hens.

She had never seen grapes before and wasn't brave enough to try one, but she went over to see what the others were eating and maybe have a mouthful of their snack. Of course, she wasn't allowed anywhere near their grapes.

But she saw what they were eating, and went back to her own grape pieces, recognised them as edible, and ate them all up.

I love these moments when learning can be observed.

Those are some of the best moments. I love watching the new ones learn from the older ones. It's a shame you don't have one like Auntie Aurora who will take on the new ones and help them along.
Yes. And it's a shame that Melissa is on her own and catching all the pecking.

I'll probably get another 3 little ones very soon. Pullets most likely. Just to share the pecking around and give Melissa a break from the bullying.
