Hi everyone. One of our hens went broody 4 months ago. We put eggs under her and she hatched 5 chicks. Her second time being a momma. They are just over 3 months old.
The issue is the rooster is "targeting" the momma hen. As soon as I open the coop in the morning he runs and mounts her immediately. That in itself does not concern me. What does is the wound he has caused on the back of her head. Now she stays isolated. I'm pretty sure the other hens are pecking the wound when they are locked up. She does't look well. Pale cone and waddles, starting to look thin.
Is it common for a rooster to single out a hen after she has weaned her young ones? We have used used broody hens to hatch chicks for 5 years and this has never happened. She is 5 years old and it looks like the flock is pushing her out. I don't want her to suffer. On another occasion I had a hen that was so brutalized by the flock that I had to cull her. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
