Hi All,
Kris here from Ohio. We are just getting into chickens and were fortunate enough to get some eggs to hatch from an heirloom flock of Crevecoeur and Mottled Java chickens. I hatched 5 Mottled Java eggs and 2 Mottled Java-Crevecoeur eggs, and now have what looks to be 6 cockerels and one pullet, although I'm not sure. They are currently 10 - 11 weeks old.
The problem I'm having is that there is little information that I have found, as far as pictures or information on the development of the Javas. The hens will get a crown and wattles, but I'm not sure at what point in their development these appear. The one chicken that I am pretty sure is a hen, has a little thinner leg and has no wattles and a very minimal comb - like little bumps. The rest have small combs (about 1/4 - 1/2") and small wattles (about 1/2"). Two have thicker legs than the other two.
With the the Crevecoeur-Java mix, the one with a comb and no wattles is crowing and seems to be quite dominant. The one with comb and wattles is not crowing. I know it is still early for them to crow, but their development is so different.
I am wanting hens, so don't want to move all 6 out if there is any chance if the ones that are looking like cockerels to me are actually pullets. I would appreciate any feedback.
