Hi everyone! One or all of my chickens have worms. I don’t know who left the droppings, but I saw a dropping that was half regular/half diarrhea or cecal and I saw little worms inside the dropping. They were very thin, but were clearly moving. I know this happens and some people even take preventative measures and deworm regularly, so I’m trying not to freak out right now, but this is the first time they’ve ever had worms. Can someone tell me what the best course of action is to deworm? And what products do you recommend?

act fast but don't freak out. give them some fenbendazole. about a pea sized amount in each of their mouths. It will probably be in the horse section of your feed store.

I recognize this deformer I use it on my horses, of course we rotate the dewormer's every 3 months to avoid the worms from becoming resistant to a particular one. How often to deworm the hens and is their a secondary application necessary within a certain number of days to eradicate new worms from eggs left after the first application? can the eggs be consumed after or is there a waiting period?

I do this about twice a year (4 times in total) I give it to them, wait about 10 days, and dose them again. and then I do it again in 6 months.

Do you have a picture of the droppings and worms? Actually, it is recommended to not eat eats for 14 days after dosing. Dosage for chickens is 0.25 ml (1/4 ml) per pound of weight given orally for 5 consecutive days. That will treat roundworms, cecal, capillary/thread worms, and gapeworms. Or for roundworms only, use it once and then in 10 days. Tapeworms, which are more rare, and can be seen in droppings are best treated with praziquantel. That is an ingredient in Equimax or Zimectrin Gold horse paste, and in Droncit or Drontal tablets. Here is a video of tapeworm segments in chicken poop:

thats intersting, thank you for the info, my hens have never had chemical dewormers...i stick to a regiment of herbs i grow at home to deworm them, i use the cayenne pepper, garlic, ginger, turmeric, pumkins and papaya amongst some other things. so far so good though. thanks again!

Believe me, years ago I tried so-called herbal natural dewormers, cayenne pepper, garlic, and pumpkin seeds, but they do not treat a worm infestation. Valbazen is an excellent wormer 0.08 ml per pound of weight (about 1/2 ml for a 4-6 pound chicken) given orally once and then repeated in 10 days for round, cecal, gape, and capillary worms.
