Is there anything I can give her? Im not sure why she is doing it. Ya know usually they go eat grass, honk a few times and cough it up but she has been doing this for an hour. Any ideas?
I had to take my pom to the vet for the same symptoms - she used an endoscope up his nose - sure enough, a $140 piece of grass up his nose!
It happened again, but no grass could be found. After the endoscopy it just cleared up. That one was only $80. Whenever I see him eating grass, he gets a lecture!
I think what you mean is a reverse sneeze. Some dogs do it all the time, especially breeds with short noses. You can massage their throat--that seems to help.
Is he retching, like he's going to throw up or coughing?
Unproductive retching could be a sign that he's eaten something he can't pass. If you don't see poop or vomit for 8 hours OR if he acts like he's in pain call the vet.
If it's coughing, it could be a number of things. Kennel cough sounds like deep wheezy, hacking coughs often producing phlegm. If he's been to the vet, kennel, groomer or around other dogs who have, this could be a possibility...even if he's vaccinated, since the kennel cough vaccine is not effective against all strains.
Like the above poster said, he could just have grass in his throat...hopefully not in his nose. My dogs sometimes do this if they get into the chicken feed.
If he's snorting like a pig...it's a reverse sneeze. If he'll let you, cover both nostrils with your fingers. This will force him to breathe through his mouth which sometimes clears it. Also try massaging the top of his nose right between the eyes.
she is a beagle and sometimes makes a wheezing like she has asthma out of the blue but this is different and seems to be getting deeper. She was out in the weeds hunting today and has been eating grass since yesterday. Shes kind of retching, like she makes that gag like shes coughing something up but theres nothing there. I gave her a piece of bread with olive oil thinking that may help if its in her throat. I SOOO can not afford a trip to the vet right now. I mean, no money. Im crossing my fingers she clears it up herself.
BEWARE OF FOXTAILS! One grass seed, with it's barbed edges, can work it's way through the nasal passages and into the brain, causing death. I actually know one person who lost 2 dogs this way, and someone else who lost one. It's a terrible way to go, but can be treated by getting the dog to the vet asap for a good exam. Good luck!
this is probably FAR from the issue but Kennel Cough is like that as well but it does sound like she's got something stuck in her throat or something simliar. I hope she feel sbeter soon!
The "honking" is your dogs way of trying to fix a callapsing trachea. It is pretty common in smaller dogs. When I worked at the vet, sometimes the doctors would prescribe some pills to help with it, I just can't remember what they were. It is harmless as long as it doesn't happen all the time. If your dog does it for an hour, I would take him/her to see a vet.
