Not a pet person, honestly. This little girl is a lap chicken, despite that. I don't encourage it, simply because, well, I'm not really one who thinks chickens are "pets". I don't eat them, hardly ever eat eggs. I just like having them around. You never see them grooming each other, cuddling each other, etc, so i behave accordingly. This one doesn't care about the norms. I daily sit in the run with treats. I enjoy this chicken time. It also keeps them hand tamed and teaches them to respond if i call. Important should they escape their run here in this 2000 acres of nothing but predators. I don't understand this girl, tho. I don't really believe chickens are capable of much affection. But she's straight to my lap as soon as i sit.
And she thinks she's a cover girl! She is a little more than 1mo. Formerly these were billed as Pearl Star Leghorns. But thanks to BYC, learned they are probably some type of legBAR hybrid.

Actually the more you watch your flock, you will see they groom each other. Cuddle might not be the right word, but they definitely will cover one another with a wing. It's pretty heartwarming to see. Except when one decides it doesn't like the other's face feathers so grooms her chin and neck bald. 🤣 They also will defend their flock mates if they think harm is coming to them or the opposite attack their flock mate if they perceive they are out of order.

I don't sit with my chickens (I probably should), but they are always nosey coming to see what I'm doing or pecking the grass off my boots.

Is a busy life, here, and I'm prepping to relocate. So i truly probably SHOULDN'T spend so much time out here. But in a way they remind me there's more to life than work. I find it restful. And I'm grateful.

This isn't my first lapper, but she's the first that seems to want affection instead of more treats. I've NEVER had one nudge my free hand until i gently scratch the base of her feathers. I even thought there could be mites! But no. Clean. She shows no interest in the digging for treats, pecking at my hands or buttons or anything like that, as some have done in the past, and besides, she comes up after they all go insane over the meal worms or fresh corn or whatever. I'm kinda wierded out, if I'm honest.
And the funniest part is, she's got many of the other girls jumping up on me now. Even the big ones, which isn't particularly comfortable when they use their talons to climb my back, lol! I'm seriously not understanding this twist in behavior. I've had over 100 chickens over 7 years. This is the first time I've been "adopted"!
Oddly, i don't mind so much!
