Meredith, our Peahen, has been sitting on her 5 eggs for 43 days and no chicks. She only leaves the nest for 5 minutes a day to eat and drink. We are worried about her. Everything I initially read said a Peahen will not lay eggs unless they are fertilized but why no chicks? We don’t want to upset her and do anything but we are worried. Will she ever leave her nest if the eggs don’t hatch?

I would say there is something wrong with the eggs and or they weren’t fertile. Average incubation period looks to be between 28-30 days and she is way over that. She probably won’t leave her nest on her own. You may need to remove the eggs. If you don’t get her off of the nest it could cause her to become extremely exhausted.
This is all coming from chicken knowledge as I’ve never had peacocks but I know 43 days is too long.

Have you candled them? You can candle peacock eggs. Was she fully sitting all day that entire 43 days or was she not fully setting at first? For chickens and ducks I do not count them as actually setting the eggs until they have fully committed to sitting all day on them. Those first couple of weeks when they are laying and just starting to sit for a couple of hours then leave the nest I don’t count.
