My Rooster attacked me today.... 3 times in 3 minutes!

Who really knows the right thing to do. Chickens thrive on instinct like all animals. We get a rooster to do a job & we get mad at him for doing his job. You said you were out of town for a few days & returned & he attacked you. Maybe, he thought you were threathning his girls. I would of responded like you did you showed him that your the boss. I read these threads & first thing typed is freezer camp, there's to many good roos out their. You shouldn't kill him because of one mistake. I will say that I never turn my back on my rooster or any rooster. I would also say that your rooster got a thighter bond with the girls while you were gone & then you showed up & the bond was threatened. One more thing & I'll get off my soap box's . Roosters spend their entire life with their flock you in turn just show up every now and again.

Brother, I would have kicked him into the other REALM! He would be boiled and fed to his ladies already. We never allowed a mean rooster to breed.

Some people don't think disposition breeds on to their offsprings but they are wrong....not only chickens but any animal species that has a hard core aggressiveness would be sent to the supper table. Yep there are many roos that can do a better job, human friendly and good with his girls, they are a dime to a doz!

Excellent observations! This is why I think it is important to do daily rooster hazing. The technique uses chicken behavior to put the rooster in second place while you are around. When you are not around, the rooster does their job.

Thanks for all the thoughts and opinions.

Samson is NOT headed for Freezer Camp yet..... But that was always the plan once he helped "grow" the FLOCK! I was very specific in wanting Speckled Sussex and they are NOT easy to find in North Eastern AZ. The SS breed has done well all winter....tolerating the Minus 20 degree temperatures without supplemental heat! Only thing I made sure was that their 2 water heaters were working (along with food and shelter)...

I will keep reminding Samson who the TRUE ALPHA MALE is...... ME! I only let them out for a few hours near the end of the day when I can keep and eye on them. I lost one hen to a Fox or Coyote in January and don't want that to happen again. They really are so much fun to watch...

That's what I was trying to say. I probably spend to much time with my chickens so my rooster knows me & leaves me alone. If he doesn't he will get the boot as well. I said I would never get a roo but he helps me keep an eye out for the girls. But there's no guarantee that you will not loose some along the way.Wish it wasn't so but such is life.
