Need emergency shopping list - please help

So sorry she passed. :hugs

For the future, the basic "rescue" type things for baby chicks is some type of probiotic/electrolyte for their water, and a vitamin also for their water. You would alternate one a day of each and one day of fresh water.

For the probiotic/electrolytes, you can search for cheaper, but we use Hydro Hen, that was recommended by a couple of our silkie breeders.

For the vitamins, most would suggest NutraDrench, as that's fast-acting and what we use as well.

If a chick seems weak, you can give them some drops of straight NutraDrench right in the side of their beak. Also, raw egg yolk is helpful too. I put in a tiny dish and try get them to eat some of it. If they won't, I mix a few drops of water into it and with an eye dropper try get them to take a drop at a time in the side of their beak.

THANK YOU! We tried egg yolk, watered egg yolk, bread soaked in milk… I was able to get tiny bits in her beak, but she just wouldn’t eat. Heartbreaking.

I picked up electrolytes and prebiotics. I’ll get some Hydro Hen and vitamins… I think there is a basic vitamin packet to add to water. Is it possible to “over-prebiotic” the chicks? We also have a prebiotic to sprinkle on food. I have to figure that out!

Thanks again - the response I received makes me feel like I have some great help!

I don't know about prebiotics and baby chicks other than the products that are made for chicks/chickens. When they get older, around 2 mos., I give them some of the fermented grains, and that's full of prebiotics and probiotics, plus nutrients.

Yes! I was hoping to go the fermented grain route! My son has a degree in fermentation and I was going to talk to him about it. We have spent grains from a distillery as well, and I thought I would see if they had any nutritional value at that point.

Good! I'll paste my "recipe" you can show him.

I make a batch of around 20# dry to put in my quart jars.

1/2 part Kalmbach's Henhouse Reserve (I get from Chewy) to 1/4 part hard red winter wheat and 1/4 part whole oats (get from our local feed mill in 50# bags). A tblsp each of chia seeds and whole flax is added to the mix when put in the jar.

Day 1: I fill one jar half full of the grain mix, then add non-chlorinated water almost to the top. I stir that and cover it with screened lids I bought on Amazon or can rubberband cheesecloth around the top. It has to breathe but keep out gnats or flies. Set out of the sun at room temp. I mark my jars with the day of the month I prepared them.

Day 2: I fill the second jar the same way as above. I stir the first jar and add water to cover it so it won't mold.

Day 3: I fill the third jar same as above, Stir the 1st and 2nd jar.

Day 4: I drain the first jar and serve in silicone loaf pans. (They usually can't tip those over.)

If you don't want it every day, just start it any day you want and know that on the 4th day, you'll be serving it.

You can use other grains and change this up to suit yourself or your chickens.
