I’m going to turn a small plain Jane metal shed into a coop. It’s 6x8 has a normal v shaped roof with no overhang.

My plan is to cut a long rectangle near the top on 3 sides. So i will have 2 1x6 vents and a single 1x8 vent.

The problem is going to be keeping the rain and snow from blowing in the vents. I don’t really want to extend the roof of the shed but need to figure something out.

Has anyone done something like this before. I’d love to see the solutions you came up with.

There are soffit vents, and vents made for RV’s and boats that might work. We put soffit vents in a wooden coop, and they might work for you…. We had these old metal vents with covers that open, but I’m not sure where you could find something like them. 3633D1E0-2C68-4E96-9F3E-A5405E70183C.jpeg 6B18B95A-C12F-4971-BEE8-1A924C14DFAF.jpeg

A cover that I could flip up and down like that would work perfect. Does anyone know what they are called. Or have any clever ideas for making one yourself?

It would be simple to add a chunk of wood on hinges to cover the vent. The harder part is figuring out a system to prop it open that can handle high winds

Simple pulley and hook system would work to prop it up.

Google ‘lid supports’

You're going to want plenty of airflow, especially right under the roof, to prevent condensation. If the shed doesn't already have a ridge vent it's best to install one -- though if you get much snow it could end up blocked.

Here's my article on ventilation: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/repecka-illustrates-coop-ventilation.77659/

You could make awnings for your vents the way I did on my Outdoor Brooder: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/run-to-outdoor-brooder-conversion.76634/
