Neighbor's dog trying to dig under fence

Ok, guess it depends on how much u care for your chickens.

Electric is not the end all, in many places it's illegal and putting it 'under' a fence or on your side of the fence to stop digging under from the other side is not going to be real effective in the end... Sure it might 'help' if all goes well, but there is a lot that can go wrong diminishing it's effectiveness in this application...

Exactly.
Would be hard to keep it clear of vegetative growth right next to solid fence....can also be pretty pricey compared to the rebar idea.

It would have to be lower than the bottom of the fence if it's against or close to the fence if nor the fence will steer the dog beyond it as it crawls under the fence... That or it would have to be many inches into the yard and still very low to potentially catch the dog... In addition to that if it's placed several inches into the yard, the dog is going to be well under the fence before it even risk getting shocked, and that begs the question is the dog going to continue forward or back when and if shocked? And if the dog goes forward into the yard after being shocked, now the electric is a deterrent to return to his own yard so what might have been a visit now extends into a long stay putting the chickens at potentially more risk and could even put you at risk if the dog turns aggressive because is now trapped in your yard and been aggravated...

Thanks all for the ideas. I am leery of doing anything that might harm the dog as I don't want to create any legal issues. I think the physical barrier ideas will work best for our situation!

I have recommended this idea in the past for stopping digging predators... Craigslist usually has chain link fencing available in their free section - and since you won't be erecting the fence all you really need is a section of the chain link itself.
Lay the fence on the ground and secure the chain link securely to the bottom of your existing fence.
The fencing will sink into the ground so you will be able to mow over it etc.
So even if the dog completes a hole under the fence as it comes up it will be stopped by the chainlink. A four foot chainlink buffer would mean the dog would need to dig an additional four feet to come out of its excavation.
Of course you would need to anchor the chain link in some manner so the dog doesn't lift it by force from underneath.
This solution is more commonly installed around a coop so predators cant dig their way in Usually this provides a dig proof zone and the digger is not smart enough to back off from the fence far enough to avoid the chain fencing.
This may be an inexpensive fix as long as your side of the fence can accommodate the laid out chain.
Consider dropping a roadkill skunk into the hole and let the pitt chew on it for a bit. My guess is the dog would not get a second chance if it returned to its house smelling of skunk - and you could deny knowing anything about it.

So if they dont use a strand of electic wire that means they dont care enough about their chickens?
I had a dog visit, and tried to dig under my chicken tractors, ,, he pushed one killed a chick ,,so today i cared about my chicken s because it will come back , i today added electric netting ,lotza Zap ,,i hope the dog comes back gets entangled and roasts , I consider roving dogs THIEFs ,i work very hard keeping my chickens thriving ,and hate when my chickens get killed by dogs that are roving ,and not contained we do have leash laws.

You are aware that, that regardless of the trespass in Ohio, that you have to make a deposit at the local court within 15 days to cover any injury and damages incurred to the trespassing animal on your property or you very well could face charges of animal cruelty? Ohio Code ~ 959.04 Trespassing animals.

i took pictures of the kill and damage site of the chickens and ive been called in before and have done nuisance control work before in goat killings ,,by dogs ,, so yes im aware ,ive also been in touch with dogwardens i cover my bases ,, also i have seen dogs that are feral with no owner ship raise theyre young in the wild ,but yes i have taken steps to avoid attacks by fortifying my chicken yard from further attacks, after a chicken kill im ussaully not in a good mood so yes i was venting during that post.

I also could set trail cam catch the dog in action and contact animal control ,and charge the owners with animal cruelties, 1 allowing their pet to push and bite and dig all of my chicken tractors with all my scared chickens flying into the wire loosing feathers ,and chick escapes and gets feathers pulled out and toyed with till it dies an agonizing death,That animal cruelty can go both ways.
