I should say, Gracie would bring us 6 or 8 eggs, one at a time. Never that many in her mouth at one time!

I keep one fake egg (golf ball) in my nests all of the time. I don't see the benefit of removing it.

My hens have a favorite, though that favorite can move around some. While most eggs may be in one nest I generally collect eggs from three different nests each day with a total of around 7 eggs. Typically I get 4 eggs in one nest, 2 in another, and a single egg in a third nest.

I don't know if having a fake egg in each nest helps them spread it around but I see no reason to test that theory.

I keep at least one golf ball (fake egg) in each nest, to ideally prevent a chicken choosing to lay elsewhere. Basically they have a pick from four nests. As you can see here, the nest on the left is the favourite (six eggs in there), but Chamomile here chose the next one. There's also one egg in the third nest. I have since closed off the end of the fourth nest so it is darker in there.

Normally the roller door to the coop is shut, so it is dark in all the nests.

Alternatively they will all want to lay in the same nest at the same time, regardless of bothering the poor broody hen inside it!

Golf balls are successful?? I have those kicking around, I don't really want to buy wooden eggs but if I must, I must.
