Nesting boxes outside of coop?

Yesterday I did a big clean of my run and coop. I left the back of the coop off (Nestera coop) to dry, and when I came back outside I found that my chickens had pulled all of their bedding (straw) out of the coop and made themselves little nests on the ground. It was absolutely adorable, if not slightly annoying to have to put all their bedding back in the coop. Should I offer them some kind of nesting box/nesting area outside of their coop? If so, what?

I'll likely do this in the summer because it just gets so hot. The run at least has a fan blowing air through it.

I'll probably do something like this.

An old dog house works great for an outdoor nesting box. But any plastic bin or crate can be used if the run is covered.
