Newly hatched chick shaking?

Three eggs hatched yesterday and the last egg (different breed) hatched today. After the last egg hatched I opened up the incubator be removed the three dry chicks, then left the wet one inside to dry. Now the newest chick is lying on his back shivering and shaking with his eyes shut. Is he dying? Is it because of the blast of cold when I opened the incubator? What can I do for him?

Hmmm sounds like he might be cold

I'm not overly sure but from what it says you opened the incubator to get the three other chick out. Was this chicken shivering like it is before you opened the incubator? If the coldness is the problem I suggest turning the incubator up a few notches see if that helps, check on em and if it doesn't help I suggest taking the chick out and holding him close to your body and cup your hands around him. I found this worked with me when mama hen hatched her eggs and the first one was cold because the hen was unsure of what to do with her a first (she now is plotting around with her adorable 3 cute chicks!)

But on the other hand the chick could be absolutely exhausted! think of it this way: you've been sitting in your egg comfortable for the past 20-21-22 days and all of a sudden you have to break out! that takes a lot of energy and many chicks totally collapse and fall asleep after the process! The shaking may mean his body is totally exhausted and he might be trying to get some rest

Just check on him every now and them, be there for your babies

Don't think removing the dry ones affected the last hatch chick....My only suggestion is keep it warm and hopefully it'll be ok although it don't sound too good. Did it make it?

Thanks. It made it and is fluffy and LARGE. But it insists on lying on its back and shaking. It's vigorous and fights me when I try to turn it. I haven't seen it eat yet but it will take water.

I don't think the shivering is from cold anymore. It's fluffed up in the brooder and is twice the size of the other chicks. I keep picking it up and it keeps flipping back over on its back with its little legs in the air shaking. I wonder if it's a neurological problem? Don't know what to do.

The other three chicks are healthy and cute. Will post pics soon!!

This is my big guy. He spends all his time lying on his back with his legs sticking out and he trembles. When I help him he eats, drinks, and I saw him poop. (Ok it might be a she I don't know). What I'm concerned about is if he has a disease. Is it communicable to the other chicks?

Peggy guy Glad he made it but it's not right that he stay on his back. Looks like he's 'bloated', would it be possible to take him to a Vet? Or call an Aviary place, they may know. Perhaps someone else can help but in the mean time, make a sling so his legs are under him and he's up right. Make it low enough that his feet touch the floor.

How long after the three chicks did this guy hatch? if it was a while after his siblings hatched that he finally hatched this could be due to low incubation temps.. which can cause some health problems But I cant see this happening if none of the others were affected? Maybe he just got lucked out? what temps was the incubator during hatch?

You see this is why I simply don't use incubators to many problems, splayed legs, putting down arghh ,separating ,cheeping to many problems

Anyways..sounds to me like hes having trouble learning to walk on his own I suggest the sling... chick nanny suggested it first although if you get something (A stick etc.) that fits the size of his leg try and stabilise it to his to legs, this should work as lying on his back is not an option and he is forced to stand.. withtin a day or two he'd be back to normal. If your not up to doing it just do the sling

As for the bloating I wouldn't worry about that, remember he did gobble up all that egg in his shell! Lol hes adorable and soo cute definitely a keeper

Looks like he'll be fine many chicks start out like this, and you know what? their full growen pullets/roosters now! whooipe!

Thanks so much for checking! The Pudgy Guy definitely has some neurological thing going on. It's not that he's weak and can't stand up, he seems to go into a seizure that throws him onto his back and his legs stretch out and shake violently. I have to hold him to eat and drink. I have him propped up in a coffee cup but if he can't stand on his own tomorrow, I think I need to put him out of his misery.
