Northern living in Alberta, Canada

My biggest concern is what to expect over the winter and seeing them deal with snow. Did you have yours last winter?
This will be my first winter with the chickens so I have been a little worried how it will go. Lots of chickens are cold hardy and able to tolerate our winters with little to no problems. Good ventilation is a must or chickens will get frostbite on combs and feet.

Since I only have 2 standard and 4 bantam chickens, I am putting a sweeter heater in the coop to take the edge off when it is really cold. I have an elevated coop, with the run underneath. Because I am in Edmonton, I am required to have my coop insulated and I am required to wrap the run area in plastic before winter hits, to protect the birds from wind and snow.

Interesting. We have no bylaws but have basically followed those rules anyway. We insulated like crazy then put in ventilation so we could control it. Thanks for your reply. Guess we will both see how it goes this winter.

It sounds like you have everything you need. I think there are so many bylaws regarding hen keeping in Edmonton since it is a large city. I have also heard good things about the cozy coop.
