NY chicken lover!!!!

well ..I havent been on for a while .
..I guess my Chicken tab was closed ..LOL..And I have been busy trying to get things up on ebay to sell ( I received in 1000s of things )
We have survived the Nasty Weather ..and everyones great ..I kept them in when it was so cold ..I have 17 hens of various ages 1 - 5 years ) and 2 Spitz Roos - and they are laying like crazy ..I got 13 eggs from them yesterday ..Averages 8 - 9 a day
I dont heat the coop but I have had a light on in there when it has been real cold to provide some warmth for them ...during the day .One day even with the light on it got down to 25 degrees... Mine always lay better this time of year .. as they eat more layer then ...than when they free range more in spring summer fall . Also The feed store I get my feed from has done a new layer mix 20 % protein ..which I love ( J J Feeds Central square ) Heres my New Hens I hatched in the summer 1 orpington mix 2 Rode Island Red Mixes ..they have started laying ..cute little brown eggs

Aria - Not laying - are you sure they are young hens ?
do you have any windows in your coop ? as no light = no eggs ..And you dont let them out ..right ? to get natural light ?
Other thinks like Pyxis mentioned 1) Worms - Natural things -you can add Crushed Pepper Flakes to their treats 2 ) too many treats 3 ) Not enough calcium ..Are you feeding them Layer ?
YES...a neighbor gave them to me and she would NOT give me
old hens. ha ha. We do have windows in our coop and we have
an outside LARGE run....and they have been out daily in the covered screened run....lots of light and sun, fresh air. And we
are feeding them 21% protein feed we get from our local
feed store that gets it from Agway. This is the first time anything
like this happened. We have one Rhode Island Red (not from the same person) and she lays one LARGE egg daily. Thanks Aria

And we

It sounds to me that you may be feeding chick feed not layer ? Or am I mistaken ? It should say 21 % Protein layer ..They need the Calcium of layer or they take it out of their bones to lay eggs .

Don't feel too badly - I have an egg or 2 daily - if I'm lucky. I have a lot of hens....:hmm
