We have a homemade incubator and the temperature hasn't been stable plus we suspect a problem with humidity. I get eggs from my cousin. We call this the event of genocide. My 5yo wanted to look at the eggs and knocked the incubator over. We lost immediately 13 eggs. They were definitely alive. I tried to save a bunch. By the way, this was a week from hatching. It was awful. I had movement a few days afterwards in 2 chicken eggs and a duck. To my knowledge they never externally pipped. There were cracks in the eggs from the event. They died anyway. Finally, I had 3 chickens that had started incubation after the event start to hatch. I was so freaked out about the living guys from the event not being able to pip and was worried about a combination of humidity problems and frankly her eggs have some hardcore tough thick shells. I know because I've cooked a bunch too. They are take a couple hard wacks against the pan to crack open. Soooo I helped these 3 little guys hatch. It was a long 24 hour process but all three are doing great. They're starting to get their grown up feathers. On Halloween we welcomed what is now the Sanderson 3. Winifred, Mary and Sarah. Mary lol is a rooster.
Today a new egg was chirping but didn't have a pip and I started the pip for the little guy. I don't plan on continuing doing this. I broke the agreement with my husband because a couple days ago my cousin brought a duck egg and a blue chicken egg. I really want a duckling and we don't think the blue one is fertilized. After this we're trashing the homemade incubator and getting one that rotates the eggs and monitors the humidity.
What does everybody think about this?
