Hello, I am now the owner of 5 chicks. theyre estimated about 2.5-3 weeks old. All of their little butts were fluffy until I noticed a few days ago that one of our chicks, Wynona, has what looks to be pasty butt. Wynona had previosuly been chirping loudly almost non-stop for a few days and some liquidy poop. So I cleaned the area with warm water and with a washcloth two days ago, got all the poop off and stuff and put her back in brooder in a seperate section under heat lamp, then returned her back w others when she dried. She's since quitted down a lot, chirping occasionally, more normally it seems. Shes been eating and drinking fine the whole time, still is. She still reaches back to itch or scratch the vent area, and most of the fluff/feathers in area are gone. Th vent area is light pink and looks inflamed. I love her so much and dont want to lose her. I just put them on a medicated chicken starter and they all seem to like it. I read thats good for building their immune system. Also, her poop is sometimes liquidy and sometimes more firm now. What should I do? Any suggestions?

Hello! is there poop on her butt again? On any of the fluff or her vent area? Liquid poops and dry poops are normal, its based on when they have drank water, as you notice chickens and birds do not pee. A liquid poop is how they "pee"

So either turn your tap on until the water gets to be nice and warm and put the water on a low trickle, use a q-tip to completely clean the area around the vent so there isn't any poop on it at all. The lack of fluff could be either because it's itchy to her to have the poop there so shes picking out her fluff, but the others could also be pulling it out because there is poop on it. Once it is clean again hold her close and cuddle her to keep her warm while she dries, I would have to see a picture of the clean vent to get a proper look on if anything is wrong.

Alright I did that, cleaned off her bottom and and then I added some prep-h and set her to dry. She’s back in brooder and everything seems fine. I was able to take another picture with a better image of the vent. From the new picture, can you tell if anything else is wrong? Or any suggestions on what to do now? What signs to look for?
Much appreciated!!

Besides the fact of it being a little bald it looks fine, it’s not enflamed, or enlarged. My guess is the others or herself are picking her fluff out because the poop was on there, be sure to keep her little bum clean so her fluff has time to come back. Is she lethargic at all?

She doesn't seem lethargic I don't think. She's still eating and drinking and pooping. She may be laying down a tiny bit more than the others, but I could be just over-analyzing her. She's also the smallest one, I'm not sure if that's relevant. She's also the loudest. :barnie
Are there certain behaviors or signs I should look for that wpuld point to this getting worse?
Thank you again!

just look for her getting really sleepy, while the others run and play she sleeps, if shes sleeping more than others and doesnt seem to be growing as fast, or even if not, electrolytes are amazing for chicks, I've had them on death row and electrolytes and booty baths brought him back within the first few feedings. What you do is take 1 cup of warm water, 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar (I use raw sugar), 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon baking soda and 1/8 teaspoon of potassium chloride (you dont need the potassium chloride its just to give an extra mineral and vitamin boost) mix it all into the warm water, use a spoon or a syringe to give it to the chick, if using a spoon dip her beak into it until she drinks but be careful not to hit her nostrils with it. If using a syringe push out a small droplet and touch it to the tip of her beak and she should tilt her head back to drink it. It will give her a health and energy boost and she will be just like the other chicks in no time :)

Good post!

I had a chick like this. sometimes pasty butt comes back multiple times after you fix it. they will eventually grow out of it, so don't worry.

Yeah she is sleeping more than the others. And usually in a corner. I'll make that cocktail tonight for her to drink. The pasty butt doesnt seem to be worse at all today. Still looks clean and not messy. I wonder why she's being lethargic by sleeping more. Do you think she'll be okay?
