Hello all,
After lurking for a fair while I decided to join to ask for some advice. I have hatched 3 peafowl, but one has a significant injury to it's leg. I thought it was spraddle/splay leg to begin with, so I hobbled her which seemed to help, one leg seemed fine after this, but it was clear she still had a problem.
I took her to a vet who dealt with birds. They said (without xrays) that she had x2 fractures and to put her down. I declined to accept this, so said I was willing for her to have an operation. The vet said she would try to find an avian orthopaedic surgeon willing to operate. I then drove to see another vet, who I thought was the former, but turned out simply to be another vet for a 'second opinion'. She again, without xrays, said to put her down.
I am a medical Doctor and in the UK we dont practice euthanasia on people so I found this to be an unacceptable solution. I dont kill my patients.
Examining her thoroughly, I am convinced she has a single injury - a dislocated knee. I dont think she has any fractures at all. If I can reduce/reloacte her knee, I think her other, ankle problem, will resolve, I think this is purely due to the tension on her tendons due to the disclocation.
I have tried to relocate the knee, and have come so close, but it's just too painful for her for me to go all the way. Im convinced I can relocate the knee, but I need to sedate her.
I've been looking for options all over the internet but there is no clear option. You cant buy ether in the UK, but I can get 'Rum ether' though I dont know if this is actual ether.
Im sure most people will be of the opinion I should just have her put down, and I accept that opinion, but Im convinced her problem is fixable, if I can just get that knee in.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to sedate enough for me to be able to move her leg enough without causing her pain? (I have meloxicam from the vet for pain relief but this isnt enough for her)
