Pecking Order

11 chicks at 5 weeks old. I'll feed about 4 different bowls of food and then put black worm larvae in my hand.
Most come at my hand and push to get in same ones always look for stuff to hit the floor.....
But I have 1 that always stays at one food container by herself while the other ones want " the treat"
I think she's the smart one. Not fighting for anything.

Grapes are real funny too. They wait for first one to pick up one. They all chase it but there's plenty for each one.

That's called Chicken Football, when one takes something and runs, and the rest give chase. Here, the grown ones do that if one finds a dead mouse in the yard one of the cats left. That's disgusting to me though, and I won't eat eggs for two weeks after that!

On a whim I decided to buy this small container of worms and (moist) crickets. My chicks are ~25 days, so a couple of days ago I tried to feed them this. They had only been eating chick starter before that, so at first they were like "what's this?" Then my BJG roo (yeah I know he's a roo) grabbed a cricket and went crazy running around the brooder with it. It was my first time seeing something like that and I l'oled.

Chicken Football is a good description. Saw a Cream Legbar pullet do the same a few hours ago. They go crazy over the crickets.

On the very first day that we brought our new 7 1/2 week pullets home, I dug up a few earthworms. When I tossed in the first one, the Buff Orpington found it, picked it up, and made excited noises. (That was when I realized for the first time that chickens made noises with their beaks shut.) The Easter Egger stole it from her and ran around the coop, shrieking with excitement. The Barred Rock chased her down, stole the worm, and ate it.

When I tossed in the second worm, the Barred Rock caught it in mid-air, made not a sound, and immediately swallowed it. Trudy doesn't mess around!

Chicken My 3 week old Bantams played the same match with a small piece of red paper! That tripped me out, I have it on vid.

Accurate name for it. My big English orpingtons will shoulder check the other hens out of the way for the mouse.

Ok I'm sitting here not realizing I could give snacks at such a young age. I feel like I had always read not to! Guess who's going home to give the 8 week old chicks a little snack

It’s honestly recommended to wait until they are two months old, so you’ve actually done it right!

Now for the rest of us

Actually, they already think wet crumbles is caviar, so I give them a plastic peanut butter lid or two full every day. Their first treat beyond that is scrambled eggs, around 4 weeks. Nothing else until they go outside though as I don’t bring grit in for them.

Well I just love it! I've been fighting the urge for sooo long to spoil them hahaha! I hatched these 3 so I feel a little tied to them hahahaha. They go into their new home outside tonight (long story on why took so long haha) BUT I couldn't be more excited for them to see all the room they are going to have. A couple hours outside then I'll put them in for the night. I CANNOT WAIT!

I ask anyone that has chickens for advice and talked with a Purina expert at a local feed store. Even Facebook sellers of feed are pretty good with information.
