Pekin Duck Club!

Regarding the deep litter method  -  my understanding of it is that it is really a method meant for an area with a dirt floor so that composting goes on.  Otherwise, it might not be so sanitary.  So,if you have a cement floor, there wouldn't be anything beneficial, necessarily, to do the work of breaking down the nasty stuff and it would just breed disease.  Just my two cents...

I really need to say that my experience supports this. Deep litter on the cement floor was yucky. Over the dirt floor pen, works great.

yeah, that's what I figured. It just didn't seem right to me. I ended up scooping up everything, washing it down, putting down new pine shavings.

I have my 3 jumble was in a good size section of my garage things stand. wondering if y'all could help me with an opinion. I have my 3 jumbos in a good size section of my garage....I have spread about 6 yards of pine savings on the floor for them...... it's about 3 inches thick for an area of I would say 40 square feet. Every morning and evening I use a pooper scooper to pick up the droppings and dispose of them. they have been out of their brooder, and in this area for 2 weeks now. I figured that I would completely clean the entire area tomorrow, replacing it with new bedding.however, I just read in my duck book, that there is a method known as deep bedding
it's states that I can simply put a new layer of bedding on top of the old layer..allowing the droppings to simply be buried week after week under layer and layer of bedding. this approach just seems really on sanitary to me, have any of you had any luck with this approach? Again I have only 3 jumbo peking . any advice would help I just don't want them to be living in yucky environment
See below....

Found my first egg from one of my girls !!! So excited lol now I don't have to buy any

I have heard people successfully do deep litter on both cement and wood floors - but usually for chickens, which doesn't get as wet. You have to do a complete clean out more often too - even with just chickens. I have dirt and LOVE using deep litter. To "duck commmander", it sounds like "HollyDuckFarmer" has tried it with ducks and didn't work out so you might be stuck with regular cleanings until you can provide a dirt floor for the deep litter.

Okay, my mallard and pekin females are supposed to be laying in October, that's when they will be 6 months old. But with the day light decreasing in October. Will they still lay? Or will it be until spring when the day light starts to increase again??

My Pekins are 7 months old now. They aren't at my house but at my cabin. Are they laying yet because I haven't been in a while.

Sigh. I meant bakers. Sorry.

Have you checked for bumbles, leg warmth, given lukewarm baths closely supervised? Perhaps a wide spectrum vitamin in the water. If it is a sprain a compress of Epsom salt in water solution may help.

I may not be able to respond tomorrow - please don't think I am ignoring you. Just other things going on.

Epsom salt is a laxative. Don't let the little drink or eat it.

She doesn't have a bum foot. When she stands up they shack and she rocks backs and lays down.

I'd love to join! We have a female Pekin Duck and want one more female. We just adore her and spoil her daily. They're the greatest family members and I'm hooked for life on them. Perfect! Thanks for creating a club.

These are my babies at six weeks old.

First bath at 4 days old.

Day 1. Had to help him out of his shell as his mother abandoned the nest and the shell had hardened.

Love this picture, 3 self basting ducks in a roasting pan. 2 weeks old
