people will surprise you.!

I'm not real sure how to put this but, I went to the market to sell some young chickens.
I don't like pricing them real high but your never going to get back what you put in.!
I'm sitting there, people ask how much for the little ones, being 5 week old white Rocks
I say $ 8.00. They are like omg.! Well how much for the next bigger ones.? Again, white Rock
9 week old chicks. I'm like $ 15.00, in a couple weeks they will be ready to eat or kept for
breeding/eggs. The guy about passed out.! he is like omg thats way to much. I am thinking
at this point he just wants them for nothing, cheap.! so I say okay, have a nice day, being as
polite as I can be. All day morning this is the way it was.! what is wrong with these people.?
I picked up my cages and went home with all my chickens intact.!
If they were to buy chicks, right now baby chicks are selling for about $ 6.- 8.00 it all
depends on the breed. then you buy the feed, I do Organic all natural feed and veggies,
treats. then you buy the bedding, dishes, waterers etc. add in the electric for heat lamps
and you got pretty penny tied up in a few chickens.! I ask how is that making out better
than paying for someone elses headaches, time spent feeding and cleaning not to mention
a safe place to house these tiny things.? I've fed and cared for them for a month or two and
people have the nerve to say your killing us with these high prices.! I have a beautiful
Rhode Island red rooster and three hens, a guy offered me $ 25. for all. slap me in the face.!
My white rock hen started laying at 4 months. My RIR's started a few weeks later.! I love the eggs but really love the difference in the heaviness of the birds.! You can buy chicks two days old for $6. any feed store. than you need feed and supplies to grow them(if you can). what do people think they feed themselves.?

Unless you have a factory farm, you won't be making money off your birds.

If you have them for food (eggs & meat) then the way to go is feeding table scraps and any old cheap feed from the feed mill. If you are lucky enough to live in an area where you don't get snowy winter weather they can free range year round - that will save on feed costs.

But if you are like me and they are mainly lawn ornaments and pets then you will need to just get over the money aspect and do what I do: Sit on my lawn chair (when it's summer haha), with my feet propped up on a bucket and a cuppa tea, watching the gang out roaming about in the yard. Heavenly!

That's so crazy! I got my two pure white rocks which were over a month old for about $12 I believe!! So $8 for yours is very, very reasonable in my opinion considering you had to pay for feed, electricity, bedding, etc. for those 5 weeks. People are just cheapos.

Around here people are asking $10 for chicks less than a week old. Tractor Supply is still running out of chicks within a few hours of getting them.

When I am at a market, I just walk away if I find the price is too high for me, I do not say anything at all. My mom and grandma had often say....oh..that is too dear....

My experience is that when I buy chickens from breeders that near or in a rural area, the price is much better than the poultry/produce shops in town. I don't mind driving the distance because I get to go on a drive away from the city and into the rural areas, nice scenery and fresh air.

A friend asked me if I would sell her a dozen of my chicken eggs for $5. At the shop the cheapest free range egg is $8. I told her I don't have enough egg to sell. Thinking to myself I would not sell it for $5.

Not many people understand the cost and the work it takes to care for chickens.

We are too far away from the food we eat. Like some people at my old work place that have not seen chickens in real life.

It's the same with my finches and mums budgies.
True breeders are happy to pay $20/pair for my Zebs while the "pet wanters" expect to pay $2each
True breeders are happy to pay $100each for mums budgies while the "pet wanters" expect to pay $5each
Our reaction is go to a pet shop where they charge almost the same as we do for inferior birds.
