I have 9 hens, 3 are bantam cochins, 1 EE, ( beautiful green eggs), 1 Polish Cross, 1 Red Sex link, and 3 barred Rock crosses. I am getting the obvious small cream colored eggs from my banties, and beautiful brown eggs from the BR Xs, but I just found a lovely egg that is lighter, it is PINK!! My polish cross came from the same yard as the Barred Rock crosses, and has some black spot on her. Is this possibly her laying these pink eggs??I was expecting white eggs from her, but I thought you genetics specialists would know.

I'd love to see your pink egg photo.. Honestly a lot of people have their own opinions of "pink." I myself have some Jersey Giants who lay a consistent pink colored egg, but in all reality it is just a pale brown that has a blushier shade than any of my other pale brown egg layers. And then, of course, there's the other kind of pink - The kind you can wash, and it disappears, then comes back when dry. That type of pink can pop up in any brown egg layer, and even be purple in dark brown egg layers. It isn't really a breed specific thing, but usually just happens every once in a while to young layers. It is caused by an extra layer of blume over the egg, which coats it a thin layer of white, and causes the egg to appear pink. Now, there are some instances, though, where this trait carries on through the hen's life, and even past her young age it will pop up.

If my Araucanas laid brown eggs, not blue - They'd lay pink eggs all their life, as they have a thick blume on their egg every single time.

And in dark eggs, it makes them look plum-purple. Here's a carton of different colors, one here is my "pink" Jersey Giant egg and one is my plum-purple Marans egg, which doesn't occur very often, but if it does, it is a trait that particular hen carries, and she will lay it once every ooh 3-5 eggs.

Jersey Giant pink is second from left bottom, Marans plum color is third from right bottom.

I don't know the egg genetics but our BRs lay a pinkish brownish egg. It is noticably pink when next to the other brown eggs.

I guess I will never know unless I lock them up in the nest box-LOL. My pink is exactly the color of your Jersey Giant. These girls are from a friend's mixed group, so no telling if some JG is in there somewhere-thanks for all of your information. Very interesting.

I thought I was getting some light pink eggs when my girls started laying. What it turns out to be was thin shelled eggs from my BR. The shell works just hadn't been perfected yet.

They look soo lovely

I will try to make some crosses to get similar colors

I have 2 production rhode island whites, [light brown eggs] and one of them is adding that bonus blume, eggs look like pink ones. But when thay stay some time in a fridge, blume dissapears in contact with air, and they slowly turn uniform brown.
