PLEASE HELP MY CHICKEN! She is panting

I’m so sorry. I don’t know if she’s online much these days, but I am going to tag a friend who is good at giving her chickens with respiratory problems KC one through a vaporizer. It might be worth a shot. @Hen Pen Jem
Many thanks. My husband gave her an antibiotic pill this afternoon but don't know if it's really working as she's still just standing and no energy. We tried to give her a pice of watermelon and she ate a bit but not much. I want to do everything what I can for her but just don't know how I can help. Thank you so much again for your help🙏

Greetings Niwatori hen,

So sorry to hear about your hen. Don't be so hard on yourself. We've all messed up when learning how to care for our chickens. We don't always have a vet to help, so we do the best we can.

Your hen aspirated when you squirted some probiotic water into her air way. A lot depends on how much water you squirted into the chicken's airway. Also, whether you put the oral syringe into the airway, or just squirted the fluid into the mouth, and the chicken inhaled the fluid. If it was just a very small amount of fluid into the mouth, and then, the chicken inhaled some of it, it's possible the the fluid will get absorbed and the irritation will clear up. That will take time, maybe a few days.

If she is sick with an infection, she needs that antibiotic. The antibiotic will even help her with the irritated air way. It will prevent further infection of the trachea. You should continue administering the antibiotic. If it is in pill form, just put it on her tongue and let her swallow it her self. If it is a fluid suspension, then, you can soak a little piece of bread and roll it into a ball. Then, put it in her mouth to swallow on her own.

What type of infection are you treating for? Is it a respiratory infection? And what kind of antibiotic are you using?

Probiotics are not needed now. Save that for when the antibiotic course is finished.
Make sure the chicken is eating. Some moist food would be good. Also, add some electrolytes to the drinking water.

These are my thoughts on your chicken health issue. I hope I have been helpful.

God's Blessings to your chicken for a healing. :)

You should have the chicken in a warm place, away from the other chickens till she is feeling better. She is in serious condition, and she may not survive this. But, we will all keep her in our prayers. With your good nursing and care she may recover. Take one day at a time.

God Bless :)

Thank you for your reply.

I gave Maigo about 3ml of probiotic water and she did cough out some so don't know how much is still in her air way but I'm really hoping that she can recover herself...

The antibiotic she's getting called Clavubactin (I don't know if it's same name in the US). When we spoke with the vet over the phone he said it's ok to give it to chickens so we are giving her 12.5g per day and today is day 2.

We don't know what problem she has, but her bottom looks bloated and lost feathers and her crop is swollen (not sure if it's because she drinks water quite a lot or infected. Anyway it's very soft like water in a ballon) and the vet said, it sounds like she has peritonitis infection. He also said that most of chickens who have this problem won't survive but Maigo has been like this for 2-3 days now so we really don't know.

She hasn't eaten for two days and she is a very picky one so it's very difficult to get her to eat. No interested in grains, veggies but ate a bit of watermelon. She really likes pasta, noodles and rice (cooked) but I found out later that these are very bad for chickens so I'm not giving her anymore. But if that's only thing she eats now, should I give or not. "put electrolytes to the drinking water." how can I make it? Salt in water?

Maigo is the only hen we have here. She used to live the other side of the road with other 20 hens as egg making machine. One day her pen got attacked by a fox and Maigo escaped thorough the hole that fox made and she was walking around in our garden. We spoke with the owner but he told us that he was going to chop off her head soon anyway so we asked him if we can keep her here as our new friend and he said yes, so she joined us one year ago. Her pen is the terrace but now she is inside in our living room. Her pen has a kind of underfloor heating (we live in Denmark, near the North Pole!) so it's quite nice and warm but now we moved her inside in our living room then we can monitor her.

Thanks again for your time and advises 🙏

Are you able to record a video of her breathing? Are you in the US?
Hello, we are in Denmark. I've just took a video and tried to attach it here but didn't succeed. The sound she's making is like cat purring loudly and breathing very heavily.
