My hens seem to be have something plaguing them over time. This is the second hen that has a poppy butt for a while and then becomes lethargic. We ended up culling the other after an injury from a neighbors dog so unsure how she would have turned out- this was over a month ago and no one has been sick since then until about last week when it started again and starts with the poopy butt.

Our current hen is isolated - still eating and drinking but has the poopy butt which I will clean, disheveled feathers and a bit lethargic like you can tell she doesn’t feel well.

Any suggestions?

Are your chickens on layer feed? Just curious as it's usually diet that causes that. In our case, it wasn't diet as they get good food and probiotics, yet one of mine always got that too. She stayed healthy as a horse though.

You could try probiotics, like the powders for the water, a little bit of yogurt, or fermenting grains/feed. That helps their digestive systems and crops in case there's bad bacteria floating around in there.

For ours, we just kept her feathers short back there. When we'd see it start building up again, we'd get out the kitchen scissors. Hubby held her, and I did the cutting. She died a couple of weeks ago, but lived a great 8 years!

Yes they are on layer feed and free range most of the time. She did get up ina low roost tonight as she had been laying on the floor so I’m optimistic she’s starting to feel better but, still not herself.
