Hello, I noticed my duck limping yesterday which we have seen our other ducks do before and they usually come right the next day. However this duck is still limping on day two and sitting down a lot. She is a free range duck so not very friendly to just pick up. I noticed today her foot was a little swollen and was able to send pictures to the vet to get some antibiotics. We were able to catch her later on to get better photos and get the first day of antibiotics in her.

This is the first time any of our ducks has had this issue so just want some advice on the best way to treat this. Our local vet does not know very much about poultry so I want to do everything we can at home to help her.

I would appreciate any advice to make sure we take care of this properly.

That is a very big bumble, yes! Soak in warm water with Epsom salts and remove the scab once it's softened. Try to press out the kernel inside and the possible puss. Apply some antibacterial ointment and possibly an Epsom poultice.

Repeat daily.

yes to what @Canadian Wind said. it likely will take a few days of soaking and applying ointment or poultice for it to get soft enough to remove the scab. just make sure to use the regular kind of antibacterial ointment , not the pain relief kind. and keep it clean by wrapping with a gauze pad and vet wrap. there are several YouTube videos showing how people wrap their ducks foot. It takes a while to get the hang of it but once you do, it’s easy . and probably keep her from swimming in with the other ducks too. wear gloves when you treat her foot. bumble is a staph infection and it’s transferable to humans. let us know how she’s doing .

and oh,by the way i’m just curious what antibiotic did the vet prescribe and how much how many times a day? if you don’t mind

So sorry for not responding sooner, it has been a nightmare catching her every day to take care of this. I have attached a photo of the prescription information from the vet. We have finished the antibiotics and she has been walking just fine on the leg however we continued to soak her foot in Epsom salt to try and remove the scab. It finally came off and underneath was hard and not soft which the vet said was good as it meant it didn’t have puss. However since then another spot has shown up and we are continuing to treat it the same but I am wondering if there is a way to keep it from scabbing. The top of her foot is still a little swollen but only in the spot where the new spot showed up. She had some black spots under her nail but those have now disappeared. I have also attached photos of the progress with the last one being a photo we took yesterday. I’m wondering if we need to do another round of antibiotics for the new spot or will what we gave her help with this one. Also the antibacterial ointment we use does not contain pain relief.

that’s wonderful she looks so much better and she’s so cute and happy faced in that picture what a sweetheart. I would give her some probiotics now since she had antibiotics.
Did the second bumble appear while she was on the antibiotics?
They are hard catch aren’t they? I usually catch mine first thing in the morning or at sunset when I’m letting them in or out of the coop I can walk in the coop and catch them easy that way , but once they’re out in the yard it’s near impossible they go under and around all the obstacles . I bought a net for catching them, but the handle isn’t long enough. I think they make a long handled fishing net though, maybe I will wish it for Christmas

You could try using vetricin spray too! And I’ve used green goo as well! This is so annoying but you could also get her little shoes. I did this when mine had it so she didn’t keep hurting it everyday. My vet also recommended lots of swimming to keep the weight off

Overall her foot looks better but this second one showed up after the antibiotics. She doesn’t seem as in as much pain from it, she is walking normal but it’s still causing swelling and has the scab now. I will look into probiotics thank you. Yes unfortunately for us our ducks are full time free range. They do have a coop but they only go in there to use the bathtub. We also got her from someone who needed to rehome her so she isn’t as friendly. So I always feel bad having to corner her and catch her she definitely doesn’t enjoy it. So I am hoping the second one heals quickly so we don’t have to continue to catch her every day. We are going on about two weeks now. One with the antibiotics and a week with just soaking. She seems to be a little more calm knowing she isn’t getting the antibiotics, and we always end it with a nice snack of peas. Though our other ducks have now caught on to this so they hover around while we are soaking her foot so they don’t miss out on any chance of a snack.

I’ve just looked up these products and unfortunately because I am in New Zealand I cannot find them sold here. We did try to wrap her foot
